Some people claim the 80/20 rule in regards to what should be rated as top-talent. 20% of your people stands for 80% of the results - in many ways this is true. However, to present a short-list of 5 top performers to a client - do we then need to look at 25 candidates? Of course this is not true. We also need to understand the motivation for change, career development, compensation etc. This explains why we seldom look at less then 50 candidates to fill one position.
How do you evaluate the top 20% candidates? In a nutshell my view is that the evaluation of candidates comes down to two overall parameters, we could call "engine" and "respect". The engine symbolizes the energy and the capacity of leading a company, group, project, client or an area. The respect is the way people evaluate your experience in a specific field and thereby respect your knowledge.
